Iran’s Goals, China’s Goals and US Policy in the Middle East

Biden administration officials appear to regard a return to the JCPOA (the “Iran deal”), or even an extended and more restrictive JCPOA, to be the solution to the problem of Iran. But it is not. Regardless of the outcome of negotiations, the problems that make Tehran a threat to peaceful order at home and abroad will remain and likely be exacerbated.

Threatening Israel — and the United States — is a matter of religious honor, but it is also a means of achieving regional hegemony.

The new multi-year, multi-billion-dollar deal with China is an indication that not only can Iran find an oil partner, but also that China no longer fears U.S. retaliation for breaking sanctions.
